Students consider their clear backpacks a violation of privacy, they ask for gun control.

In February, as many of you might have heard, a gunman killed 17 people at a school shooting in Parkland, Florida.

Students of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School were made to wear only clear transparent backpacks that they were given. This was done as an act of safety, so the school says.

“When students return from spring break, clear backpacks are the only backpacks that will be permitted on campus.” stated the superintendent of Broward County Public Schools, Robert Runcie, in a letter that was addressed to the students’ families last month.

The letter also said that they are considering putting metal-detecting wands and the students would be required to have their student identification badges with them at all times.

The students of the high school were not pleased by having to wear transparent backpacks and showed their rage on social media – mostly Twitter.

“My new backpack is almost as transparent as the NRA’s agenda.
I feel sooo safe now.
As much as I appreciate the effort we as a country need to focus on the real issue instead of turning our schools into prisons. ” – one student wrote on twitter, alongside a picture of her clear backpack.

“These clear backpacks accomplish absolutely nothing. Not every item placed in the bag is visible and there is no possible way to monitor the contents of over 3000 backpacks. It’s great to know that this is where my community puts its resources.” – wrote another student.

There were other students that took this matter on a more humouristic view, saying that they wouln’t share their gum now that it is visible in their bags.

“PSA: given these new clear backpacks, you will now be able to see that I have my phone charger with me. No, you cannot borrow it (you can’t have any gum either)”

“Just know that now that we’ll have clear backpacks none of you can lie to me about not having gum”

Although many students just mocked the backpacks, others made it clear that this would only make them more uncomfortable and not safer at all.

“Clear backpacks don’t do anything except make us look stupid. We want to be safe, not uncomfortable. The only thing that can really have an impact on our safety is gun control” – wrote twitter user @car_nove on the matter.

What do you think, are the transparent backpacks a good measure of security, or are they just ” an illusion of security ” as the students are calling them. Let us know in the comments.
