Upon returning from spring break, the students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High were made to wear “clear backpacks” as a safety precaution.
We’ve covered the story on why the clear backpacks were mandatory, if you haven’t red it check it here.
Although many students found this policy a violation of their privacy, some are seeing a silver lining.
The clear backpacks might be useful to illuminate the fact that female students do need to bring menstrual hygiene products (tampons, pads) to school. And since this is a stigma for teenagers, some hope maybe the clear backpacks will change that.
No one should be ashamed of carrying necessary products.
A student of the school wrote on twitter :
“The only positive about these backpacks is that maybe, hopefully, the stigma around periods will be removed. Also, that Cameron now knows how expensive tampons are.”
Cameron, that is mentioned above is her classmate who recently shared a photo of him and a clear backpack full of tampons. Cameron Kasky did this as a way of showing that he stands behind those who feel embarrassed to carry them.
The picture that Kasky captioned with #MSDStrong and posted went viral in a matter of hours.
A classmate responded to the photo by saying “Yass Cameron, if only I had the confidence to do that”. To which Cameron responded “Here for you if you need anything.. tampons and beyond”
“To those with questions about my tampon backpack-
I only got lights. I didn’t know. Getting supers for tomorrow.
Sizes, pricing… I’m learning new things about women’s health right now. This stuff is expensive. Steps must be taken to make these health products easier to access”- Cameron tweeted later on, showing how expensive female health products are.
The teens in Parkland have made major statements the past few days since the shooting. From gun control to period stigmas, these teenagers show that the voice of the youth matters.
To be honest, if everyone was as smart as the Parkland students, the world would be a better place. What did you think about the article? Let us know in the comments below.
