During a podcast with Chris Booker, Perez Hilton claimed that dance class might make your child homosexual.
“I purposefully would not put my son in dance class because dance class might make your kid gay,”
Even though Booker gave him a chance to walk back from the comment, assuming he was joking, Hilton persistently said ” I think dance class can make your kid gay”
When the podcast aired, the backlash was immediate, and for good reason.
Marilyn Drew Necci from GayRVA stated that Perez Hilton was proof that you don’t have to be straight to be homophobic.
“Are there gay men in dance? Yes. Did dancing make them that way? No.” – writes Dance Magazine’s Courtney Escoyne.
“I would prefer if my son was heterosexual”
Upon Booker’s question what was wrong with being gay, Hilton continued “Well, nothing, clearly, but I would prefer if my son was heterosexual. If I had to choose, I would prefer to be heterosexual, too. It would be easier.”
In this defense, Hilton later tweeted the following:
“No matter how much we evolve we always carry our past with us. I’m an out and proud gay dad of three who grew up in a machista and homophobic Latino community in Miami in the ’80s and ’90s and I went to an all-boy Jesuit school. It was hard. I’m a work-in-progress. Aren’t we all?”
Honestly, he does make a point though..
Although a lot of progress had been made in the LGBTQ+ community, there is still a lot of work left.
Do you think Perez is wrong for wanting his son to be straight instead of letting him choose for himself, or are you on his side? Tell us in the comments.
